Fake it ’til you make it: how to become more confident in 2 minutes

It’s almost that time. You’re getting ready to pick up the phone to call a prospect, or stand up and deliver your opportunity presentation, when you feel it rising up through you like a heatwave. Your anxiety is kicking in, and you become hot, dizzy, and nauseous all at once. You feel overwhelmed, and start praying that ‘maybe they won’t answer and I can just leave a voicemail’ or ‘please God, let there be an evacuation drill right about now’.

Anxiety can be debilitating, and is often the number one reason why we find it so hard to take the actions we need to in order to grow our business. If only we could flip some kind of magic switch and instantly become more confident and powerful. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

What if I told you, that there is a scientifically proven way to go from nervous to confident in just two minutes? Would you believe me? Well, I came across this amazing Ted Talk by Dr. Amy Cuddy that promises just that. I took her technique and tried it for myself, and I can confidently tell you that IT WORKED FOR ME!

Amy’s Ted Talk entitled Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are’ has been viewed over 36 million times, and I have personally shared it with hundreds of people. Her talk focuses on the key idea that just by changing your posture, you can literally affect the hormonal makeup of your body. Your body can change your mind, your mind can change your actions, and your actions change your outcomes.

Her experiments showed that by adopting a ‘power pose’, you can significantly increase your testosterone levels (the ‘dominance’ hormone), and decrease your cortisol levels (the ‘stress’ hormone). In just two minutes, her participants developed more ‘presence’ – they communicated more passionately, confidently, enthusiastically, authentically, and comfortably. What an amazing state to develop!

By employing her techniques ahead of (and during) a meeting with a potential prospect, delivering your opportunity presentation, or just talking to a skeptical family member, you can significantly boost your confidence and effectiveness in communicating your business with conviction, determination, and inspiration.
